Defy Normality

Define “normal.” What is the actual definition? Not the dictionary definition that you can look up online, but the definition that high school students tend to crave so badly. Often times people hide behind their definition of normal. “I have to get those shoes! I just want to be normal!” But what is it? Who creates the standard of ‘normal’ that all others must abide by in order to not feel left out or insecure. Oh, you don’t know? Then why is it so important for those that try to fit in to be noted as normal? It seems almost like an insult. As if you would rather be known as the guy that everyone proudly describes as average. But why strive for mediocrity? So it’s cool to hear your friends introduce you to people by saying, “yeah, my friend over here is totally regular. We are all so proud.” Um, thanks? However, normality is not only a ‘privilege’ that people accept, it is one that they strive for. “If only I could just be normal!” Why is it such a good thing to fit in with other average people, or to never be noticed, or to fade slowly into the background? All of these sound more like negatives than they do positives. When succumbing to conformity, being normal seems like a gift, as opposed to an insult. However, that's just the first step to compromising all of your uniqueness and individuality to fit the standard that everyone around you sets. Do you want to be just another cog in their machine, or do you want to own it?
